Jerk Bait

The jerk bait, I guess it takes on to know one cause I know one. That's a basic 5 - 6.5 inch model. This has always been one of my best  "fall back lures" for water 35º - 55º.  I classify my soft jerk baits right along with the hard baits. With jerk baits, I have  two colors tied on, one shade something and one maybe say red or chartreuse. The bait color is not as important as the depth you work it trough, and how you move it.

Before you look at these maps remember those italicized words.

Some of these arrows on the left are pointing out a few great jerk bait areas. We are looking for points or islands as a place to begin searching. These places will be numerous and checking different areas will help. I will fish the first 50 yard or so to check the area, then I might check 10 more. Most of these areas will be shallow. Boat sits in 7 feet or less and bait lands in 4 feet or less.  I fast jerk the lure 4 or 5 time then pause count "1 and 2"   then repeat. I Know as I idle into an area, that more than one bait will be tried. Not only color but how deep my bait will go. I might have 5.5" floating bait for 2 - 5 feet of water. The try a tad larger and deeper running bait for slightly deeper water. If I try a soft jerk bait I may allow it to sink to different depth as well as adding some weights.

Jumping now to deeper points. Maybe not deep water where the bait lands but now the boat sits in 8-20 feet. Here I will try much deeper running baits as well as the suspending types. Again the first 50 yards or so is all I need. I am looking for places where the water gets shallow for the first time. Arrows mark these places so check them out. These places are not as common.
