Carolina Rig

If you need to find bass you know what to do. Year round, year after year it keeps working. I make 2 major changes for cooler weather. I like lighter weights, from 1/2 down to 5/16 on light line. The next change I make will be small lures, 4 inch lizards, trick worms and centipedes. I like to fish these lures in areas I have found fish, either recently or at least during the year. I still use heavy weights as well and try to swap up some.

As in most cold water fishing you are better off starting anywhere the contour lines run close. Again these area are more likely clean of grass and offer other types of cover. Plus you are most likely close to the edge of a grass line to boot. During most of my success over the years my boat was in 12 feet with the lure sinking to say 5 feet. During this cast if I feel grass I may choose the lighter version. If I feel rocking or stump areas I slow down to barely moving. Remember, in most cases, you feel the weight go through the cover first, so slow is key.
