The Gambler Lures only Tournament was a great success and a tremendous amount of fun. I had the opportunity to meet several of the staff from Gambler and they are far more than folks that just work for the company. They are anglers who know how to fish a grass lake. They have a huge variety of lures that are ideal for grass lakes and the bag weights showed the bass like them as well.
If you asked me to describe the number one feature of the Gambler bait line it would be the action. These baits wiggle, swim and dart around more than any lures I have used before. Plus the added scent even made me hungry. The baits seemed to be triggering a strike from every bass that saw them. We boated at least 30 bass and culled our first limit completely. We ended up 3rd with 22 plus and I will be posting the official results as soon as I receive them, but here is how our day went.
I had the opportunity to fish with a Gambler pro staff member. I will be the first to admit that this gave us an edge. Kenneth Grover has done exactly as a pro staff member should, by spending most of his fishing time perfecting the use of Gambler Lures.
He knew the best lures for each condition we found and in turn gave me a lesson that I can now share with you. As always, I take the FLG visitors out on the water through this Web Site so we can all learn together.
Here is our three best lures all rigged and fished in the same manner. We rigged them with a 3/4 oz lead, 4/0 hook and spent the day pitching to grass that was both scattered and matted. The bass were hanging around in both places so targeting both was essential. The bass started out as if they were not active. They seam to be eating out of lack of will power to resist. As the day got hotter they began to want the rod as well.
Our first limit came mostly by using the Flapp'n Tail Worms
The tail of this worm swims just like the tail of a small blue gill. We had a bass spit up a blue gill in the live well, once again proving bass eat bream in a grass environment.
We also used the 8 inch ribbon Ribbon Tail Worms
We also used the Ugly Otter
Using these three lures we caught bass all day long. Our limit had a kicker of 6.7 which really helped to bump us up to third. Many boats were right on our tail with 20 plus pound sacks. We both had sore arms and hand from casting and setting the hook so many times. What a day !!
Nice turnout with 171 boats and First place was 25plus and second place was 24plus and the day's lunker was 8.9.
Gambler and Guntersville proved to be a awesome combination.
I do want to take the time to thank the Gambler staff for the fun FREE tournament. They did a wonderful job and said they will likely be back to do the same next year. Keep an eye for that event you will want to be a part.
Something else that made my enjoyment so high was their youth program. They paid 3 more places to the highest finishing boats with a youth under the age of 16. I spent some time chatting with a boy about how excited he was to find out where he had placed. That touched me to see these kids get a taste of some bass fishing competition.
Again, my thanks to the Gambler staff and all the tournament anglers for one great event.
